The joy of Mexican cuisine

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Let’s talk today what are the usual dishes and drinks eaten in a Mexican restaurant. Although the cuisine is very varied and differs from region to region there are similar features found in every Mexican café or restaurant.

The foundation of Mexican cuisine is unpretentiously simple. Two ingredients stand out, corn and beans, as they have been eaten for thousands of years by people in Mexico. Corn is a component of many popular dishes and a base for masa, a special dough to make such popular Mexican dishes like tamales, tortillas, gorditas and many others. Nachos are very popular in Mexican restaurants, the interesting fact is that they aren’t widely eaten in Mexico itself but have found a cult following in the world. Dishes like burritos, tacos and carnitas of various kinds and flavours are very popular too. Chile con carne is a favourite dish among many, as well as different variations on the theme and dishes that use fusion cuisine with a Mexican basis.

What concerns drink tequila is a world’s favourite but Mexican wines and beers are also famous around the globe. Eating out in restaurants that pride themselves in making Mexican dishes is always a treat to the palette, the eye and the ear.
